Healthy BMI Ranges by Age Group
The BMI formula (weight ÷ height²) is the same for everyone, but what counts as a healthy result depends on age. Fixed BMI categories were built for working-age adults — children are measured against growth percentiles instead, and many geriatric guidelines recommend a somewhat higher healthy range for adults 65 and older. Use the breakdown below alongside your result, and check with a doctor for a personal read on where you stand.
Children & Teens (2–19 years)
BMI-for-age percentile (CDC growth charts), not a fixed number
Underweight <5th percentile · Healthy 5th–84th · Overweight 85th–94th · Obese ≥95th percentile
A growing child’s healthy weight shifts constantly with age and sex, so pediatric BMI is plotted on a growth chart rather than compared to the flat adult thresholds. A pediatrician is the right person to interpret it.
Adults 20–39 years
Standard fixed BMI categories
Underweight <18.5 · Normal 18.5–24.9 · Overweight 25–29.9 · Obese ≥30
This is the age range the standard WHO/CDC adult categories were built around, so the fixed cutoffs are most directly applicable here.
Adults 40–59 years
Standard fixed BMI categories
Underweight <18.5 · Normal 18.5–24.9 · Overweight 25–29.9 · Obese ≥30
The same adult categories still apply, though natural muscle loss (sarcopenia) can begin in this range — two people with an identical BMI can have very different body composition, so pairing BMI with a body-fat or waist-circumference check adds useful context.
Older Adults (65+ years)
Standard formula, wider healthy band commonly recommended
Research-supported healthy band roughly 23–30, vs. 18.5–25 for younger adults
Several geriatric studies associate a slightly higher BMI with lower mortality risk in this age group (sometimes called the "obesity paradox") — a bit of extra reserve can help buffer illness, while a low BMI is more often linked to frailty and muscle loss. Guidance varies by individual; a doctor should weigh in before treating a result as a health concern.
How We Calculate Results
BMI is calculated with the standard Body Mass Index formula — weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²) — the same method used by the WHO and CDC.
Your result is then placed into the standard adult categories: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), or Obese (30 and above).
The result is based on the inputs you provide and the assumptions described below. Learn more about how WIN Calculator develops and reviews its calculations.
Example
For example, converting a value you already know (like 1 mile, or freezing point) is a quick way to confirm the calculator matches a number you can check by hand before trusting it with your real figures.
Assumptions
- Conversions use fixed, standard conversion factors rather than context-specific or regional variants, unless the calculator says otherwise.
- Date, time, and scheduling calculators assume the standard Gregorian calendar and don't account for historical calendar systems or leap-second adjustments.
Limitations
- This tool runs entirely in your browser with no live external data connection — any value described as "current" (an exchange rate, an IP address, a live weather reading) must be entered manually rather than fetched automatically.
- Real-world approximations (like heat index, wind chill, or daylight hours) use standard formulas that can differ slightly from an official, location-specific reading.
Sources
- Standard, publicly documented conversion factors and formulas — including NIST, ISO, and other industry-standard references for the relevant unit or domain.
Validation
- Every formula in our calculator library is covered by an automated regression test suite that checks its output against known reference values before any code change ships.
- Formulas are written from publicly documented sources — standards bodies, government agencies, or established textbooks — rather than derived from scratch, and are reviewed again whenever the underlying guidance changes.
